Woolworths Mobile Plans Review 2019

What is Woolworths Mobile like?

Woolworths has always been the king of the cheap mud cake. For less than five bucks, you can find a small birthday party with leftovers for a food fight to boot. But I digress. Australia’s supermarket giant started selling post-paid mobile plans back in 2015 allowing customers to pick up a shiny new Samsung with their milk and bread. Let’s take a look at how the Fresh Food People’s plans stack up in our Woolworths Mobile review.

Woolies’ phone contract deals aren’t quite as economical as its, frankly mad, savings on mud cakes but it does offer some appetising early bird deals if you’re looking to get the latest smartphone for a steal.

In our Australian mobile provider analysis, Woolworths Mobile scored 4.5 stars out 5 for value, taking the cake for data-per-dollar value. That score was based on the provider’s SIM plan offerings, not its phone plans.

If you’re after a phone plan on Woolworths Mobile, we strongly recommend seeing what’s on offer when a new smartphone releases. Woolworths Mobile is known for offering attractive pre-order bargains on the latest Samsung smartphones. Outside of its pre-order deals, Woolworths Mobile plans are less competitive at higher data tiers.

You will often find Woolies selling the cheapest 24-month phone contract on the market for a variety of phones, which is tempting for those folks who need a lot of data.

The best Woolworths Mobile phone plan

The best offer from Woolworths Mobile has to be its $50 SIM only plan. At $50 per month (for 24 months) you get 60GB of data, unlimited calls and text.

Who does Woolworths Mobile suit?

The ideal Woolworths Mobile customer is someone who wants the latest Android smartphone at a decent price and doesn’t use a lot of data. Woolworths Mobile offers data banking (or data rollover) even on its phone plans, so any unused data will roll over at the end of the billing month.

If you don’t need a phone, or you prefer to purchase your handset outright, Woolworths Mobile SIM plans offer some of the best value you can get on the Telstra Wholesale Network the (best prepaid option goes to ALDI Mobile).

Who doesn’t Woolworths Mobile suit?

You’re a little late to the party but you are starting to think it might be time to upgrade to the latest Samsung. Woolworths Mobile might be your best bet (but it’s always worth checking its plans).

If you want the best coverage and the most data, you might want to consider checking out Telstra or Optus. For the sake of comparison, here’s the Samsung Galaxy S10 128GB on Woolworths Mobile and the same phone on Telstra and Optus.

As you can see, Woolworths Mobile is technically the cheapest but it’s a small price to pay for extra data and coverage with Optus and Telstra.

What network does Woolworths Mobile use?

Woolworths Mobile uses the Telstra 3G/4G wholesale network; the Telstra network MVNOs have access to. The difference in coverage is minimal. The wholesale network covers 98.8% of populated Australia and Telstra’s own reaches about 99.4%.

The wholesale network used by Woolworths Mobile still has more coverage than both Optus and Vodafone.

Take a look at the map below to compare the wholesale network with the full Telstra network.

Does Woolworths offer prepaid mobile phone plans?

Yes. And some decent value at that. Woolworths Mobile prepaid didn’t quite make the cut for our round-up of the best prepaid mobile plans in Australia but it came close. Woolworths Prepaid offers regular promos and deals that boost its value but its base plans aren’t as competitive.

There’s also to convenience to consider. If you a prefer a printed recharge and you’re a Woolies regular, might as well hit two birds with one stone.
