Is Kogan Mobile any good?

The Australian-made online shopping destination for affordable tech launched its own MVNO service back in 2015; with a small section of prepaid plans with a variety of inclusions and expiry lengths. Operated online with no physical store presence whatsoever, Kogan Mobile’s prepaid options are simple, no-fuss plans that scored a 4 out 5-star rating for value and 3.5-star rating overall in our mobile provider analysis. But it’s an otherwise barebones mobile service, with no additional perks or bonuses and fewer features than most.

The best Kogan prepaid plan

Kogan Mobile’s Extra Large 90-day expiry prepaid plan took first place in our round-up of the best long-expiry plans in Australia. When it comes to sheer data per dollar value, Kogan couldn’t be beaten in the long-expiry space.

Here’s a closer look as Kogan’s best prepaid plan:

What mobile carrier network does Kogan use?

Kogan Mobile uses the 4G Vodafone network, joining the likes of Hello Mobile, Lebara Mobile and TPG Mobile. As far as Australian mobile networks go, Vodafone has the smallest coverage footprint out of the three big providers (Telstra, Optus and Vodafone). This isn’t so much of an issue if you live in a metro area, or anywhere with significant Vodafone coverage but if you live out in Woop Woop, Vodafone’s network, and Kogan’s Mobile plans, might not work for you.

For those folks, there’s ALDI Mobile.

Use the map below to see if your area is better covered by Telstra, Optus or Vodafone.

Is there a Kogan Mobile App?

Yes, there is. The Kogan Mobile app is available for Android through Google Play and for iOS through the App Store. Through the Kogan Mobile app, you can activate your SIM card, manage your account, recharge your service (or schedule auto recharge) and check usage logs for calls, text and data usage.

Reviews for each version of the app are middling, with the Google Play version more favourably reviewed by users (but not by much). With that said, there’s not much to it and not a lot to be critical of (it’s got nothing on Lebara’s beloved app experience).

How do I activate a Kogan Mobile SIM?

Activating your Kogan Mobile SIM is straightforward. Once you’ve received your SIM card in the mail (after ordering from the Kogan website), you will be directed to koganmobile.com.au/activation.

There, you will be asked to enter the starter pack mobile phone number and the last four digits of your SIM number, which can be found on the back of the package you received in the mail. That’s where you will also find your Kogan Mobile phone number.

If you wish to retain an existing number from Kogan or any other provider, be sure to specify the phone number before completing the activation.

How do I recharge Kogan Mobile?

The easiest way to recharge is via Kogan’s website. All recharge variants are available through Kogan’s normal marketplace. Because recharges are sold via Kogan’s regular marketplace, you can take advantage of features like Zip Pay, if you need a recharge now but don’t have the funds to cover the entire cost.

Alternatively, you can top-up and switch on Auto Recharge (with a nominated direct debit card) through the Kogan Mobile app.

How to contact Kogan Mobile

If all this online business proves difficult, or it’s simply not an option for you, you can always get in contact with Kogan Mobile over the phone.

The Kogan Mobile customer care team operates 7 days a week between 8 am and 8 pm AEST. You can reach them on 1300 056 426 or if via 12612 from your Kogan Mobile handset.

Does Kogan offer mobile roaming?

Yes. Kogan Mobile recharges don’t come with any roaming bonuses included but you can purchase an international roaming add-on through the provider’s website. Kogan Mobile’s international roaming pack costs $15.00 and gives you 1GB of data, 100 standard texts and 30 minutes of calls to selected countries over a 24 period. It can only be used when travelling to the following countries: UK, USA, Thailand, New Zealand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Fiji, Singapore and China.

That’s not great value but then again, few roaming options are. At least Kogan Mobile offers some kind of international roaming add-on.
